Australia wide Saline Shortage
QuestionWe use normal saline which we add sodium bicarb and lidocaine with adrenaline to for tumescent local anaesthetic when doing Endovenous laser treatments. As saline is difficult to obtain at the moment, would we be able to use Hartmann's solution as the base?
Answer (from a Clinical Pharmacist from Drug and Therapeutics Information Service)
A few references I have found recommend using Ringer’s lactate or Hartmann’s Solution (chapter of reference attached). I also confirmed in the injectable compatibility guide (also attached) that this would be suitable, so agree that Hartmann’s would be a suitable alternative to normal saline (see p9-10 of chapter).
